Theory [16 Feb 2006|12:28pm]

[ mood | blah ]

An E-mail I sent to my parents. Wanted to get your guys' opinions as well:

Ok, well I've been thinking this for a while, but I'm in talks with people here at SPU about re-taking/finishing theory at Olympic College next year. I'm really not satisfied with the program (or lack thereof) this year. From what I've heard the teacher last year was great, but when he left, the program left with him. I'm sure first year students are doing fine, but trying to start where one was left off is hard to do.

Right now, we're doing things that are review for me...things we were doing second quarter of first year theory for me at OC with Rick. I think I would be more motivated to continue to do class if it was a continuous challenge as opposed to review work that doesn't keep my attention. This appears to be a case where a student actually wants to learn...imagine that!

What would your guys' opinions be? I would still be considered full time at SPU and just do theory at OC next year. It would be easy enough. I'd just have to work it out with Dr. Holmes here, which sounds like it could work.

I'm so done!
i wrote this entire piece...a really cool sounding piece...
granted, it's ONLY 2 pages long...but i worked pretty dang hard on it

but it's too fast!
Nobody could play this piece...let alone the 1st time they SEE it!
But it's all i've got

I've started 2 other pieces, but i can't write anymore!
I'm all out of ideas!

gosh i'm going to be up all night just waiting for something to come to me!

Project 1 [09 Jan 2006|01:36pm]

Well...it's the beginning of 2nd quarter...
I'll be so glad when this year's over (which, as my brother just stated, is only about 5 months away!)

I am working on the 1st big project of the quarter...an impressionism piece...and boy is it hard.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it's really neat to be able to plunk around and ignore the rules that have been drilled into our heads from the beginning....but it's still so very hard

My song is coming together quite nicely...i'm just not so sure it'll be 2 minutes long come tomorrow morning...
*sigh* oh well...
just an hour more, and i'll put it away to start working on my English homework (just about 20 pgs. of reading, no sweat)...and then after my class this evening, i'll get back to the project!

lol 'till then,

Hey all, another wonderful first day of theory. It lasted about 20 minutes, 5 of which consisted of Henry looking like the proverbial deeer in the headlights.

It's good to be back.

lol i know it doesn't have to do w/theory...but it's music, so what the heck [12 Nov 2005|12:50pm]

While I was preaching in a church in Mississippi, the pastor announced that their prison choir would be singing the following evening. I wasn't aware there was a prison in the vicinity and I looked forward to hearing them.

The next evening, I was puzzled when members of the church approached the stage. Then the pastor introduced them.

"This is our prison choir," he said, "behind a few bars and always looking for the key."

ok, i'm new to this percussion thing, but you try playing [quarter note triplets - eighth note triplets - eighth note septuplets] in one measure of 4/4 @ 200 bpm. pretty darn impossible to me. plus this is on the bass drum.

yeah, this is the first song we were handed on the first day of class...i'll have to work on this one. my metronome is driving me crazy already...

yy! for junior level classes.

Give me the most outragious chord progression that you can think of and i'll do it. i want anything you can throw at me. i want in analysis form. i feel like writing it out and checking myself and hearing it and it's beauty. i'm telling you i want to see like, C7(3!, 5!), or something fun like that. okay i'll check back to see what you have for me.

Perfect Pitch [30 Jun 2005|01:47pm]

Do you wish you had perfect pitch? DO you know someone who does? Do you want to know more about it? Do you ever question what it's like for people who have perfect pitch, people who can pull notes out of thin air? Well, if any of these things apply to you, or you are just feeling like joining, hop on over to
and see what the fun's all about!
Hope to see you there!

Hey all,

Hey, I also survived half of music theory with Rick "The Cat" White. Only three more quarters to go. Here's hoping I'll continue with the whole living thing.

[ mood | Where are my friends? ]

Dear friends,

I would like to know your favorite memory of Richardo Blanco. Mine would be...

Sixth Quarter the Brittany that was in my class would talk about eating Peanut Butter and Egg sandwich. He thought that it would be gross so he would always make fun of her for it. The last day we every saw her she brought him a brown paper baggy. Inside was one of those sandwiches. I hear from down the music hall, "Oh Gross!" He saw what she brought him. Then she left the music building. He comes walking down the music hallway with the sandwich in his hand eating it and saying that it was really delicious.

I <3 Theory :D [09 Jun 2005|11:20pm]

[ mood | amused ]

Hi, my name is Daniel, and I can spell my name in three tries. My favorite color is fluorescent clear... Yeah, I like theory too. I just finished a year of theory with the crazy old man, Rick White, and it was a breeze. Well, there was a little work involved, and a lottle cognative stimulation or whatever, but it was a LOT easier than I thought it would be. And now I've begun my musical journey of doom. I can now say that I am learning more about music. For a while, I was stuck at being able to read music a little, and not being proficient at all with intervals. So yeah, theory is good.

Hey, I'm Elisabeth and I just finished two years of music theory with RICK---Play That Funky Music----WHITE---Boy. I loved it! I thought I was going to fail most of the time, but as it turns out I did well, as did our whole class. :)Anyway, I love Rick, he's the best. He cracks me up so bad, and he's an awesome teacher. Like Katie (We tough girls stick together) I didnt' really cry. I did stress out a WHOLE BUNCH(!!!!), but loved ALMOST every minute of it. :D I love composition, but especially love 20th century composition! :) I loved our class, we had an awesome time together. I LOVE ALL YA'LL CATS!!! Anyway, I'm looking forward to hearing from everyone and chattin' it up with all the lovely theory people in our world! PIECE OF CAKE!!! How many layers??

I have just finished my first year of Music Theory with Risk "the Genius" White...and boy was THAT a trip...
I'll admit, it had its ups and downs (i came home and cried for the first month of class)...but as i sat back and look at all i learned and accomplished, i am quite content.

I absolutely ADORED some of the chorales/pieces I wrote, and have them all on my comp still!

I will be famous someday...
and will look back and laugh at all this...

I - V - I [08 Jun 2005|11:14pm]

[ mood | excited ]

This is Derek, your system moderator, here to welcome you to the xmusictheoryx livejournal community. This community is intended to unite music theory nerds everywhere, so please spread the word around.

As for myself, I'm now officially a junior at Seattle Pacific University, where i am working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Gutiar Performance with a minor emphasis in Music Technology. I've survived my first year of Rick White's music theory class at Olympic College, and will be taking my second year of theory (sadly not with Rick and my band of theory friends) this upcoming fall at SPU. I've been writing music since i was 4 years old (i'm 20 now), and have been playing guitar for 8 years (check out some of my music here).

Anyways, i hope you enjoy your time with this community.

- Derek.
